I get the impression that people want the same thing every time from books and movies, regardless. They seem to want certain ingredients in certain doses, and these ingredients are the fictional equivalents of high fructose corn syrup. Basically, the reader says "I want candy" and if they don't get candy, they become righteously indignant. "I wanted candy," they insist, "and you didn't give me candy. What the fuck is up with that?" To which you can only reply, "what the fuck is up with YOU?" Candy addict.
Even if the subject matter is children murdering other children for the amusement of adults, as long as all the demanded ingredients are there, then whoopee, we got candy. It's all good.
It's stupid but that's the way it is. Don't even go there if you don't have their ingredients. Really, it's not worth it.
